People exercise for various reasons – fitness goals, training competitions, or simply wanting to feel better. JP Ramirez knows there are many motivations that bring people through the doors at X-ercise Science in Peru. He’s created a fitness center where everyone is welcome.
“We work with everyone – young adults, middle age, elderly, athletes, post and pre-physical rehabilitation, and those just looking for a great workout,” he said.
He opened his first 1,400-square-foot fitness center 12 years ago. Ramirez and his team have built a strong business with a loyal following, including many members who have been with him since he launched the first center. Today, X-ercise Science is located in a 15,000-square-foot facility in Peru.
The business earned multiple recognitions in the Best of the Illinois Valley competition, including Best Fitness Center, Best Personal Trainer for Tanya Corbett and One of the Best Personal Trainers for Michael Ramirez.
“It’s nice to see our staff recognized for their hard work,” JP Ramirez said.
In addition to access to general fitness, X-ercise Science offers members one-to-one personal training and small group classes, including cardio boxing, boot camp and high-intensity training. Classes are offered in four-week increments, making it convenient for members to commit to a class session.
Tanya Corbett, a trainer at X-ercise Science, won Best Trainer in the contest. She has been a trainer for four years, and has been with the gym for two. She became a trainer after serving in the U.S. Navy for 24 years.
Corbett said winning the contest was “a tremendous honor.”
“It signifies not just recognition for my hard work, but also the impact that I have made within the community, helping individuals reach their fitness goals and build healthier lives,” she said. “It is also a reflection of trust from clients, and is a validation of my skills, dedication and passion for what I do. It is also a reminder that my efforts are making a difference, and it inspires me to continue to grow and improve as a personal trainer.”
At X-ercise Science, the staff understands sometimes fitness is more than building muscles and dropping pounds.
JP Ramirez said pursuing fitness can be a good way to manage stress and challenges in life and build mental strength and resilience.
JP Ramirez studied exercise science and athletic training at Eureka College and started his career at a fitness facility, where he worked his way up to personal training director. When he was ready to launch his own business, he decided to return to his community.
For JP Ramirez, the fitness center is a place where staff and members are treated like family.
“We really strive for a family-like environment,” he said.
It helps to have some family members around the center, too. JP Ramirez is the oldest of four brothers and is proud to have his younger brothers, Michael, Jesse, and Robbie, as part of the team, as well as his wife, Krissa, who works full-time as an operating room nurse in addition to lending support with office work at the fitness center.
John Mitchell serves as lead trainer, and Raul Mendoza is the manager at X-ercise Science.
JP Ramirez said all his training staff are certified, and continuing education is a priority, with classes and opportunities to work with professionals to develop their skills.
For those looking to get started in the gym, JP Ramirez suggested that beginners start where they are, and. use what they have.
“Don’t complicate it. Do what you can and repeat the process as many times as it takes,” he said. “Showing up will build momentum. Be patient. Life changing is a lifestyle. If you need help or guidance, we would be happy to help.”
Corbett recommends that people define their “why” as they begin their fitness journey.
“Why does it matter to you? A strong reason will provide motivation on the toughest days. The second step would be to start small and simple. Small changes, micro-changes, are easier to stick to and build momentum,” she said. “Health is not just a goal – it is the key to a successful and fulfilling life."
